The Importance and Proof of the Resurrection of Christ

The Importance and Proof of the Resurrection of Christ

The resurrection of Christ; an undeniable event which turned the world around. Some people have attempted to and failed at disproving that the resurrection never happened. The resurrection is a pivotal point of the gospel. If it weren’t for the resurrection then the gospel would be ineffective. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:14-19, “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”

The Christians faith is rested upon the scriptures and the scriptures tell us of the factual truth that Jesus Christ did indeed rise from the dead. There is no other hope that can be had. If it were not for Christ’s resurrection we would have nothing to live for in this life, there would be no hope. We would be absolutely miserable.

Some people who do not want to believe what the word of God has to say seek to discredit it. The devil knows how crucial the resurrection to the rest of scripture so he has put those men to work in fabricating lies to cause men to stumble and fall at the truth. I would like to use this paper to take a look at the falsities which are presented concerning the resurrection of Christ, the reasons why they are not true and conclude by writing on the blessings of the resurrection.

The first proposal to look at which disproves the idea that the resurrection didn’t occur would be the fact that the Romans had placed a seal on the tomb which Jesus was in. From what I understand the punishment for someone having broken the Roman seal against the law would be crucifixion upside down. Think about the amount of work which would have to be done to be unnoticed by the soldiers the people who broke the seal. They would basically have to kill all the soldiers, because otherwise the soldiers could be accused of having broken the seal. I am certain that those soldiers guarded the tomb with all their ability. According to the website, a roman unit which would have guarded the tomb was between 4-16 soldiers and each soldier was trained to protect 6 feet of ground each. Now, keep this in mind. The entire purpose of these guards was to stop people from trying to get in within the three days of the resurrection. This was their job. Also, knowing this fact in particular the soldiers were certainly diligent specially since they knew that a punishment for a roman soldier slacking on his duty was to have his clothes stripped from him and used to start the fire which he would be burned in.

The second fact I would like to bring out is that the tomb was empty. That would have been a dead give-away that the resurrection was false if there was somebody still in there. Where did the disciples preach? In Jerusalem, right where the tomb was so everybody could look into it and see the tomb was empty. I’m sure that the tomb became a tourist attraction. According to the website, I found out that a man named Paul Maier spoke on this subject and said, “ . . . if all the evidence is weighed carefully and fairly, it is indeed justifiable, according to the canons of historical research, to conclude that the sepulcher of Joseph of Arimathea, in which Jesus was buried, was actually empty on the morning of the first Easter. And no shred of evidence has yet been discovered in literary sources, epigraphy, or archaeology that would disprove this statement.”

A third fact is that there were numerous amount of eye witness’s who saw Jesus after his resurrection. In first Corinthians fifteen six Paul states that above five hundred people saw Jesus after his resurrection and at that point there were still many who were alive and could testify that they saw Him. Also, it was not just at the one time, but others saw Jesus at different times. The resurrection of Jesus was not some under cover event. Jesus made this event known. Since the Bible claims that this is such an important event, it would be very important to have evidence and eyewitness’s of it happening.  The apostles were all eyewitness’s. They had touched the Lord and seen the nail prints in his hands as well as the spear piercing in his side.

That thought leads into the fourth fact. Why would every one of the disciples go to the grave never changing on their belief that Jesus was God if they were trying to propagate a lie? The fact is that many of the disciples not only preached their whole life professing Christ rose from the dead, but they also died for that belief. Within a article from concerning the apostles death, the description of the apostles death was very gruesome. Nobody in the world will give up their life for something which they don’t think is worth it. If the disciples had lied about the resurrection and had indeed stole the body out of the tomb, they would have for sure admitted it before their death. The disciples dedicated the entire rest of their life toward propagating the gospel across the world. They declined from the life of ease and sacrificed all including their life in order to share the gospel. Again, there is no way a person would go to that extent for a lie that brought them no benefit.

There are plenty of other proofs of Christ’s resurrection which point to the fact that Jesus Christ did indeed raise from the dead. Since we have gone through a number of proofs of Christ’s resurrection I would like to conclude this paper with pointing out the importance and picture of Christ’s resurrection as we can see from the scripture.

Every time a Baptism takes place in church we are reminded of the importance of the resurrection of Christ. Every time we sin against God we should be pricked in our mind about the resurrection of Christ. Every time we hear of a new child of God being born we should be reminded of the importance of the resurrection. Romans 6:3 says, “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life.” Baptism is a picture of what has happened to every believer. Every saved, child of God has been “buried”. When a person gets saved they bury that wicked sinful nature in the tomb to never be seen again. As a child of God every day I should live as the new man that I was born into and never look at that old rags I left behind in the tomb.

Baptism takes place in church as a picture. A picture of what Christ has already done in their life. A picture that was shown through the resurrection. Jesus Christ died on the cross bearing all of our sins, the sins of the entire world were placed upon his shoulders and with that sin upon Him he was separated from the Father. There cannot be any relationship between God and sin. Jesus then physically died and was laid in a tomb. Then three days later Jesus gloriously resurrected. Sin, death and hell had no power over him. And nevertheless I live today not by mine own strength, but through the power of Christ I have put to death the flesh and have been quickened in the spirit.

The picture of the resurrection is an moving picture for every believer because it is a picture that Jesus had all power. It gives us assurance that because of the power of God he can free us from all sin. I am not bound in the grave of sin, but through Christ I have life. Through Christ every person can have life and have it more abundantly than he ever imagined.

In conclusion, the resurrection of Christ though under fire by people who wish to disprove the Bible has included enough information to relieve all doubt and give substantiate evidence through the Bible and other historical facts. Furthermore we have seen some of the reasons why the resurrection is of such importance which is why critics wish to attack it. The bottom line is that the resurrection is a crucial point of the work of Christ and we can know that it is truth and rest our faith upon it!
